This is Big Mama, otherwise known as BCY0324. Humpback Whales were the most widely-hunted species in our area and hadn’t been seen for 100 years until the nineties. Big Mama is considered one of the forerunners of the great Humpback Comeback since then. She has been coming to the Salish Sea to raise her babies every year since 2003.
Humpback Whales can get up to 52ft long and weigh 35 tons.
This picture was taken by whale and ocean advocate Jeff Friedman, captain with Maya’s Legacy Whale Watching, in the Spring of 2017, when Big Mama brought her sixth (recorded) calf home.
